How to Add New Feature Data

This page outlines how to add a new type of spatial data to Maprosoft. Maprosoft allows geometry data to be added by various means:

  • ESRI Shape Files
  • KML Feeds
  • GeoRSS Feeds

Adding Data Using KML Feeds

The following steps need to be performed in order to add data using KML Feeds:

  1. Logon to the Maprosoft administration using your web browser with a URL as follows:
        http://your-server-team/cms/admin
  2. Open the 'Display Groups' control panel:
    1. Ensure an appropriate display group exists for the new type of data you are adding.
  3. Open the 'Feature Types' control panel. You will need to add a new type of feature for the new data:
    1. Click on the plus sign at the bottom of the list on the left side of the control panel.
    2. Select the new feature type in the list and complete the form on the right side of the control panel.
Note: It is important that the shape type matches the type of shapes defined in the new KML or GeoRSS feed.
  4. Open the 'KML Subscriptions' control panel:
    1. Add a new KML subscription.
    2. Complete the KML subscription details form.
    3. Save the KML subscription.
    4. Execute the KML subscription and wait a few seconds to allow the KML to be retrieved and processed.
  5. Open the 'Data Summary' control panel:
    1. Expand the appropriate display group section of the new feature type.
    2. Check to see how many features were extracted from the KML subscription.

Adding Data Using GeoRSS Feeds

The following steps need to be performed in order to add data using GeoRSS Feeds:

  1. Perform the steps in the previous section to set up the display group and feature type for the new data.
  2. Open the 'Feed Subscriptions' control panel:
    1. Add a new feed subscription.
    2. Complete the feed subscription details form.
    3. Save the feed subscription.
    4. Execute the feed subscription and wait a few seconds to allow the feed to be retrieved and processed.
    5. Click on the 'Show Import Log' button to check the feed was successfully retrieved and processed.
  3. Open the 'Data Summary' control panel:
    1. Expand the appropriate display group section of the new feature type.
    2. Check to see how many features were extracted from the feed.

Adding Data Using Shape Files

Adding data to Maprosoft using shape files is a little different than other methods because extra information can be provided in the form of shape file metadata. As of Maprosoft version 4.3.0, the provision of shape file metadata is optional (see Shape File Data). The following steps need to be performed in order to add data using ESRI shape files:

  1. Start by ensuring the shape files contain spatial data in either POINT, POLYGON or POLYLINE format.
  2. Optionally, you may like to provide shape file metadata:
    1. Create a new text file in the same directory as the other shape files, but with a file name suffix of '.meta.xml'. For example, if you have 'parks.shp', the metadata file name will be 'parks.meta.xml'. This file will define the metadata used by Maprosoft.
    2. Edit the metadata file as specified on the Shape File Data and Shape File Metadata pages such that it defines the new feature type.
  3. Compress the shapes files into a single ZIP file using a standard compression tool such as 7-Zip.
  4. Logon to the Maprosoft administration using your web browser with a URL as follows:
        https://www.maprosoft.com/app/admin
  5. Open the 'Upload Data' control panel.
  6. Upload the ZIP-ed version of the shape files.
  7. If the metadata file specifies a <groupName> that has not yet been defined, you will need to open the 'Display Groups' control panel and create a new display group corresponding to the name specified in the metadata file <groupName> element.
  8. Open the 'Feature Types' control panel and select the type of feature as specified in the metadata file <featureTypeName> element. Check that all the settings are OK - change any as necessary.
