Unlocking Local Government Spatial Data
30th August, 2014
Ever wondered why your local government website provides such poor interactive map capabilities, if any? All local governments are responsible for managing vast amounts of spatial information such as details about public parks, zoning regulations and facilities, however, much of this is not available on local government websites.
Everyone should expect to be able to find information about their community easily on their local government website, but typically they are a long way behind the status quo.
So why is this the case? The typical local government authority is under resourced and can't afford to manually maintain detailed information in two separate systems - their spatial database and website.
This is where Maprosoft's products can help. Maproweb provides an intelligent link between an organization's spatial database and their website. The organization's website administrator can add maps to the website without any coding, knowing that they will remain up to date as the organization's GIS staff independently maintain the data.
The range of output options is second to none. Marrickville Council in Sydney, Australia recently added a catchment areas map. Marrickville were able to easily select custom colors to distinguish the northern and southern catchment areas. In addition, Marrickville extended Maproweb's automatic highlighting system with custom highlight icons for various types of catchment characteristics.
Organizations can choose to display their information on either Google Maps or OpenStreetMaps.
Aside from maps, Maproweb can also present spatial information in tabular form which is useful for comparing details.
